Play the Golf Variation Called Nines

Nines is a variation of golf that challenges players to decide when to take a risk with their golf shot. In the game of Nines, the most you can lose a hole by is four points. The limited range of scoring can even out the scoring for players of different levels who want to play against one other. The player with the highest score wins, unlike in standard golf, where you want to have the lowest score.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Organize a golf game for three people. Nines can be played only with three players.

  2. Step 2

Play golf in the standard way. The only difference with the Nines version of golf is how each hole is scored.

  3. Step 3

At the end of each hole, award five points to the player with the lowest score. If two players tie for the highest score, give each of them four points. If all three players have the same score on a hole, each receives three points.

  4. Step 4

Award three points for the second-highest score on a hole. If two players tie for the second-highest score on a hole, award two points to each player.

  5. Step 5

Award one point to the player with the lowest score on a hole. If there is a tie for highest or second-highest score on a hole, this third-place score will not be awarded.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can take greater risks on your tee shot and drives in the Nines variation of golf, as the most you will lose a hole by is four (or three, if the other players tie).
  • Be cautious with your putting once you are on the green. A difference of one stroke in Nines can cost you two or three points in the scoring.
