Windows that were installed in older homes are known as single pane windows. A single pane window has just one pane of glass and as a result are not that energy efficient. A double pane window however has two panes of glass that has an insulating layer that is normally argon gas. This makes a double pane window much more energy efficient than a single pane window.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape Measure
  • Hammer
  • Reciprocating saw, such as a Sawzall
  • Can of Foam Insulation
  • Caulk or Sealant
  • Screwdriver or Drill
  1. Step 1

Measure the size of the current window. Use a tape measure to get accurate dimensions of the existing window opening. Measure the width and height from the inside of the window from the sill to the top of the frame.

  2. Step 2

Remove the old window from the wall. Look and see how the window was installed originally to figure out what tools you will need to remove it. An older window could be installed with screws or nails that may need to be removed with a drill or cut with a Sawzall.

  3. Step 3

Pull the old window out of the opening by grabbing the bottom near the sill and sliding the window out. Make sure to clean up all debris, such as nails and flakes of paint, from around the window opening

  4. Step 4

Place the new double pane window into the opening and secure it to the frame. A new replacement window will need two to three screws to secure the window on each side depending on its size. Use a screwdriver or a drill to secure the screws to the frame.

  5. Step 5

Seal any gaps that can be seen between the window and the wall. Run a bead of caulk around the edge of the window on the inside as well as the outside to prevent leaks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Replacement windows are easier to install when replacing an existing window. An older style window may require removing a metal track or sliders on each side of the opening. A Sawzall can be bought or rented at a home-improvement store. Caulk and sealant can also be purchased at a home-improvement store. A Sawzall does not come with the blade attached.
  • If a standard window is not available a custom window will need to be ordered. A Sawzall can cause debris to fly around, so eye protection should be used.
