How to Do Find-a-Word Puzzles
-
1
Take a look at the puzzle, and see if any words jump out at you. Your mind picks up patterns, and often common words stand out when mixed in with a jumble of letters. Once you find a word, check to see whether it is on your word list. If it is, circle it.
-
2
Once you have circled all the words that jumped out at you, it's time to look for the more elusive words. Look at your word list for words that have less common letters in them, such as "Z" or "X." These letters are generally used sparingly in find-a-word puzzles, so once you narrow these down, it is easier to find these words. Find the letters in the word search and check to see whether they are actually letters in the words you are searching for. Once you find them, circle them.
-
3
Now that you have circled the words with less common letters, look in your word list for words with double letters, such as "OO" or "EE." While these are generally more common letters, they usually aren't placed together in these puzzles unless they are part of a word. Check these double letters in the puzzle, and see whether they match the words you are looking for. Circle them once you find them.

4
Now, look in your word list for really long words. There are limited places in the puzzle that these long words can be placed. The longest words are often placed diagonally. This will be the first place you want to look for these types of words. Once you find these words, circle them.

5
By this point, most of your words should be circled. The words that are left are just not sticking out and need a little teasing to be found. This is the point where perseverance pays off. Pick a word from your list, focus on the first letter and starting at the top corner of the puzzle, scan the letters until you come to that letter. At the letter, circle around to see if the second letter of the word is present. If it is, continue on with the third letter to see if the word is there. If it isn't, move on to the next first letter. With a little perseverance, you will find all the words.
