Open a free audio recording software program. Access Microsoft's Sound Recorder by clicking "Start," "Programs" and "Accessories" in Windows, or download free Audacity recording software.

Use the stereo patch cord to connect your cassette player and computer, inserting one end into the "Audio Out" or headphone jack of your stereo and one into the "Audio In" jack on your computer.

Click the "Record" button in Audacity or Sound Recorder, then press the "Play" button on your audio cassette recorder.

When the song is completed, click the "Stop" button in Audacity or Windows Sound Recorder. Save your file by clicking the "Save" button in your recording software. Type the file name when prompted and press the "Enter" key.

Tips & Warnings
To digitize an entire side of a cassette tape at once, cue the tape to the beginning of the side in question.
Damaged or warped cassette tapes that play with blank spots or distortion will record with these defects in digital form.
