How to Make a Bass Fishing Jig
Most bass fishermen know that the plastic worm is a very productive bait, but the really savvy ones know when to put the other baits away and pick up the true champion of all bass baits: the bass fishing jig. Although the bass fishing jig is a bit harder to learn to use than many bass baits, those that take the time to learn how to use it will never want to put it down. Bass fishermen will find that this bait excels in weeds, wood and rocks, making it very versatile.

Determine the color and weight of the finished jig. You can make jigs from 1/32 oz. to 2 oz., but most bass fishing jigs aree 1/8 to 1/2 oz. Then purchase jigheads and skirts from a local supplier or an online source such as Bass Pro Shops, Netcraft or Barlows Tackle (see Resources).

Hold the jighead with your left thumb and index finger (if you are right-handed). Hold it by the painted head with the curve of the hook turned to your right.

Trim the weedguard parallel to the barbed area of the hook and about 1/8 inch above the barb. Also remove a few strands from the weedguard if the jig is 1/4 oz. or less. The goal here is to leave enough of the guard intact to allow the bait to bounce off an obstruction while making it softer when a bass bites.
