How to Lay Asphalt Roll Roofing

Laying asphalt roll roofing is one of the easiest and quickest roofing methods that can be done by the average home owner; it is also one of the least expensive and durable types of roofing available. Used only for flat roofs with no inclination or slope, roofing rolls are made of the same materials as asphalt shingles. They are suitable for residences and businesses use and can be used on porches, garages, tool sheds and more.

Things You'll Need:

    Lay Asphalt Roll Roofing

  1. Step 1

Lay down the underlayment on the roof.

  2. Step 2

Cut strips of roof roll about 17 inches wide. These will be the starter strips.

  3. Step 3

Apply roofing cement along all edges of the roof, and then lay the starter strips on top. Nail down the strips at 12-inch intervals.

  4. Step 4

Unroll the roofing and place over any valleys in the roof; the rolls should each be 18 inches wide; nail down the rolls with roofing nails.

  5. Step 5

Place roof rolls over the entire roof, nailing down with roofing nails every 4 inches. Apply roofing cement in a 2-inch strip over the edges.

  6. Step 6

Create a 6-inch overlap that will in turn create a vertical seam when the roll is too short to complete a full row. Nail down every 4 inches. Seal these vertical overlaps with roofing cement.

Tips & Warnings
  • Since asphalt roll roofing is fragile, take precautions in cold weather. Prevent cracks or splits in the material by heating the roof rolls before trying to roll them.
