How to Make Wedding Favor Cookies

There are so many options for wedding favors that it is hard to pick. A favorite favor is a cookie that is designed to match the theme of the wedding. Although making and decorating cookies is not extremely difficult, it is time consuming, so allow plenty of time. Making your own wedding favor cookies allows for freedom in creativity. Just make sure to call on the wedding party and friends to help, and the cookies will be done in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a theme for the wedding favors: colors, shapes for the cookie cutters. Types of cookie cutters could be traditional wedding shapes, such as the cake, bells or doves; or the shapes can be based on the theme, like leaves for a fall wedding or Christmas designs for a December wedding. This is a great time to really get creative.

    • 2

Find a sugar cookie recipe--look for an easy one that will make a good amount of dough.

    • 3

Follow the recipe to make cookies (see Resources). Make extras just in case. The cookies all have to cool completely before icing, so allow cooling time.

    • 4

Make royal icing (see Resources). A large batch will most likely be needed, depending on the number of cookies being decorated.

    • 5

Separate icing into plastic squeeze bottle and add coloring--a different color each bottle.

    • 6

Evenly squeezing the icing out, outline the shape of the cookie in the base color for the cookie. If the cookie is a bell, use yellow icing because that will be the base color; if it is an autumn leaf, use orange icing.

    • 7

Once the outline is complete, fill in the area by zigzagging the icing, and then use an angled spatula to spread the icing out evenly and remove any air bubbles that might have formed.

    • 8

      Allow base icing to set.

    • 9

Use accent colors to add details; for example, for the leaf, use a brown color to add veins in the leaf.

    • 10

Add edible decorations to embellish if desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Allowing enough time to let the base icing dry will result in cleaner lines when adding details--about 2 hours usually, depending on humidity. To add a card with the date or couple's name, use a straw to poke a hole in the top of each cookie before baking.

  • Be careful with icing coloring. It easily stains surfaces, including skin.
