How to Install a Central Vacuum Exhaust

Central vacuum cleaners go a long way in making the chore of cleaning our homes a lot easier. Instructions

  1. Install a Central Vacuum Exhaust

    • 1

Choose the location for placement of your central vacuum exhaust. This should be on a wall close to your unit to avoid a long run of PVC pipe. Make sure the exhaust is away from doors, windows, patios or other outdoor living spaces.

    • 2

Trace a circle where you want the exhaust vent located, with the end of the PVC pipe.

    • 3

Drill a pilot hole from the inside wall through to the outside. If your garage is made of cement block or brick, use a masonry bit. Cut out the circle using a hole saw for sheetrock or a hammer drill for block or brick construction.

    • 4

Push the PVC pipe through the hole so there is approximately 1 to 2 inches protruding to the outside. You should have enough pipe protruding on the inside to allow you to easily connect a finishing ring.

    • 5

Add the PVC finishing ring to the interior side of the pipe using PVC cement. This is where you will connect your central vacuum cleaner's exhaust kit following the manufacturer's instructions that come with your specific kit.

    • 6

Attach the vent cover or flap to the exterior pipe.

    • 7

Add a bead of weatherproof caulk around the PVC pipe where it enters through the wall. This will help keep out drafts, moisture and insects.
