Making your own custom doors is an economical way to refurbish your bathroom cabinets. The new doors can be painted in the color of your choice to accent your existing bathroom decor or you can use a light stain to allow the natural grain of the wood to show through. Cabinet doors can be cut to fit bathroom cabinets of any size. Follow these simple steps to make new bathroom cabinet doors for your home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • 3/4-inch-thick wood slab
  • Electric saw
  • Sandpaper or power sander
  • Paint brush
  • Paint or wood stain
  • Hinges
  • Door handle
  • Screws
  • Screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Measure the opening of the bathroom cabinet where the doors will be installed. Add 1/2 inch to 1 inch on each side so that the doors will slightly overlap the side of the cabinets. Divide the width of this measurement by 2 to find the size of each door panel.

  2. Step 2

Choose the wood and type of finish you will be using on the bathroom cabinet door. If you will be painting the door, you can choose a less expensive type of wood because the grain will not be visible. If you prefer a natural finish, choose an attractive wood like oak or mahogany.

  3. Step 3

Use an electric saw and your measurements from Step 1 to cut two door panels from a 3/4-inch thick wood slab.

  4. Step 4

Sand the door panels on both sides. Start with a coarse grain sandpaper and switch to a finer grain to create a soft, smooth surface.

  5. Step 5

Apply a coat of the finish of your choice, whether it is paint or wood stain. Allow the finish to dry overnight.

  6. Step 6

Set the door panels upside down on the floor. Place two hinges on the outer edge of each door panel, about 4 inches from the top and bottom. Mark the location of the hinges and check your line with a level so that the doors will hang straight when attached to the cabinets. Drill holes and attach the hinges with wood screws.

  7. Step 7

Drill the necessary holes to install your choice of door handles on the inside edge of the door panels. The handle should be about 2 inches from the inner edge where the two cabinet doors will meet. Use screws to attach the door hardware (usually included with the hardware itself).

  8. Step 8

Have someone help you hold each door up while you attach the hinges to the cabinet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you have adequate ventilation when working with paint and wood stain. Wear a face mask to cut down on the harmful fumes you inhale.
