How to Become an Expert IT Manager
Becoming an expert IT (Information Technology) manager takes years of dedication and constant training. With technology-related jobs growing at such a fast rate, the need for well-qualified managers is on the rise as well. Choosing a specialization or specific area within IT is the first step on the road to becoming a successful IT manager.

1
Select an area of specialization. To find what you're interested in, try shadowing or interviewing a professional in your perspective field. Specific fields can include IT Project Management, Information Security and Systems Management.
-
2
Gain on-the-job experience by working in an IT-related field. On-the-job experience is the best kind with IT jobs, although training and education are just important. Look into a short training program if you have limited experience, or apply for an entry-level position related to computers that requires little experience.
-
-
3
Look into an associate's or bachelor's degree program. Most manager positions require at least one of these degrees, though many years of experience can sometimes be substituted. Look for programs related to Computer Science, Business Administration (with a focus on IT) and Management.
-
4
Work in your selected field while in school. This is perhaps the hardest part, but the most necessary. Look out for paid internships and entry-level IT jobs that work with students' schedules.
-
5
Look for opportunities to constantly build on your resume and managerial skills. This can include seeking certifications such as PMI (Project Management Institute) and CISM (Certified Information Security Manager). (See Resources below.)

Tips & Warnings
Many entry-level jobs offer training programs. If enrolling in a training program, meet with an admissions personnel to discuss the best options for you. Look in your community for IT conventions, seminars and training sessions. These are sometimes free, and in many cases you can add them to your resume. Prepare your resume. Highlight your IT-related jobs and show how they have given you managerial experience.
