Microsoft ActiveSync can quickly retrieve your contacts, appointment, and tasks from PDA/smart phone. However, it doesn’t have the view and edit functions. To view and edit these data, you will need other software such as Microsoft Outlook.

Here is the instruction of backup/view/edit the contacts, calendar, and tasks and other data from my ATT tilt to computer with the help of ActiveSync and Outlook 2007.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1
    Install ActiveSync only without Outlook

    Install ActiveSync only without Outlook

Before connecting your phone to computer, install both ActiveSync and Outlook.

*If you don’t install Outlook, you can only synchronize file, favorites, and other non-outlook information. That means you WILL NOT be able to retrieve your contacts, calendar, and tasks from the phone (see figure). However, you can still access your phone and drag/delete files via “My computer” –> "Mobile Device” (but you still CAN’T access your contacts stuffs)

  2. Step 2

Do not connect the phone to computer. Open Outlook. Outlook will ask you to set up an account, ignore it unless you want to use it to check email.

  3. Step 3

LEAVE OUTLOOK OPEN. Turn your phone on and connect it to computer. ActiveSync will run automatically, and a wizard window will pop-up, asking you to set up a partnership with your phone and computer.

  4. Step 4

After the wizard, your ActiveSync should show “Connected”. Click “Sync” on ActiveSync. ActiveSync will start getting contacts, calendar, tasks and other data (the items that you pre-set in the previous wizard) from your phone. Outlook will automatically get the contacts, calendar, and tasks data. Now you can manage and edit these data on Outlook.

  5. Step 5

After you done with the changes, click “save” on Outlook. If you want to send the modified data back to your phone, don’t close Outlook, and click “sync” on ActiveSync.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your computer has both ActiveSync and Outlook, and a partnership between ActiveSync and phone has been established. But Outlook doesn’t retrieve data every time you connect the phone. In this case, connect the phone -- delete the partnership on ActiveSync (under “File” –"Delete Mobile Device”) -- disconnect the phone – Close and reopen Outlook – connect the phone – complete the partnership wizard – Sync
