Fresh spinach is abundant in warm weather and many farmers' markets offer it in large quantities for an economical price. Steaming is a very easy way to cook spinach. The only things needed are a large pot and a bit of water. Cooked spinach can be eaten as preferred, such as drizzled with butter or olive oil.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 pound or more of fresh spinach
  • Large pot with a lid
  1. Step 1

Wash the spinach carefully and pull off any woody stems. Spinach is often grown in sand and this gets into the wrinkles of the leaves.

  2. Step 2

Select a deep pot with a lid and put the cleaned spinach in it. The pot should be large enough to accommodate the spinach without overcrowding or crushing it.

  3. Step 3

Add only about 2 tablespoons of water to the bottom of the pot. There will also be water droplets on the spinach.

  4. Step 4

Put the pot over a low flame so the spinach will cook gently. This should take about 5 minutes, or until all of the spinach is bright green and limp.

  5. Step 5

Drain the cooked spinach in a colander to remove excess water.

  6. Step 6

Eat as preferred-with butter, salt or added to other dishes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not overcooks the spinach. It is done as soon as all of the spinach in the pot is limp.
