Connect your Apple iPod to your computer or laptop using the USB cord that came with the iPod. If this is the first time you've connected it to your PC, you may get a message asking you to reboot your computer. Do so; you won't need to follow that step next time.

Download a copy of iTunes onto your computer. You can use the disk that came with your media player, or simply go to apple.com/itunes to download the latest version. Follow the download instructions.

Launch your downloaded iTunes program and complete the iPod registration, checking the options you want to have (such as automatic updates of your songs when your iPod is connected to iTunes). It's a good idea to name your iPod when prompted, rather than leaving the default model number, so you can easily find it in your iTunes interface.

Familiarize yourself with the iTunes interface when you have completed set up. You'll see a bright section in the middle complete with album covers, images and graphics; this is the iTunes store. To the left is a simple list where you should see your iPod by the name you gave it during setup.

Click on your iPod name, in the left hand column of the iTunes interface. The middle section should now be blank if you have no songs already on your iPod. If there are some, they will appear in a list in the middle section.

Click "Library," which should appear at the top of the left hand column. Here, you'll see any songs you have copied into your iTunes library from your CDs or other sources.
