Hurricane season runs from the beginning of June, through the end of November. Know what is necessary to prepare for a hurricane and how to keep your home and family safe.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

A hurricane can cause extensive damage, and all precautions should be taken to prepare for a hurricane. Hurricane damage is caused by heavy winds, flooding, storm surge, and mudslides. If you live in a mobile home, or in a coastal area, your property should be secured and you should evacuate to a safe location.

  2. Step 2

To protect your home from a hurricane, plywood should be used to board up windows. If plywood is not available, the windows should be taped with masking tape. Loose objects should be placed inside, or secured with rope. Cars should be parked directly against the home.

  3. Step 3

To protect yourself and your family from a hurricane, BE PREPARED. As soon as you hear warning of a hurricane, fill the gas tank of your car, withdraw cash from your bank, and prepare for power outages in your area. This includes storing several gallons of water, ensuring flashlights are powered with new batteries, keeping nonperishable food on hand, preparing a first-aid kit, etc. Water may not be drinkable for some time after the hurricane, so be sure to have enough drinking water to last several days. You'll also need water for flushing toilets, washing hands, etc.

  4. Step 4

To keep food fresh during a power outage, keep the refrigerator door closed as much as possible. Place beverages, lunch meat and cheese in a cooler. This will eliminate the need to get in and out of the refrigerator often.

  5. Step 5

Keep communication open! Telephone lines are often torn down during a hurricane. Make sure you have your cell phone(s) fully charged. It's also important to have a battery operated radio to keep yourself informed during power outages. Have extra batteries stored for the radio, as well.

  6. Step 6

If you have a baby in the home, stock up on diapers, wipes, baby food, powdered formula & bottled drinking water, etc.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't forget about your pets! All pets should be brought indoors. If it's necessary to evacuate to a shelter, call ahead of time to ensure they accept pets. If not, they'll be able to direct you to a shelter that does.
  • NEVER GO OUTSIDE DURING A HURRICANE!
