As a way to boost sales, manufacturers of many different items will offer rebates. A rebate is a refund of part of an item's purchase price. If a rebate is offered on a product, follow these steps to ensure the rebate is honored.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Be certain to carefully read the terms and conditions of the rebate offer. Fill out the information in a timely manner and send the rebate in before the expiration date.

  2. Step 2

When opening packaging, make sure the UPC code and proof of purchase is not damaged. Remove and save the UPC and proof of purchase, if necessary for the rebate, before throwing away the packaging.

  3. Step 3

If the rebate is for a large amount, send it by traceable mailing system, like Certified Mail with the USPS.

  4. Step 4

Keep a copy of the rebate coupon and write the date you redeemed the rebate offer directly on the paper. Keeping a copy of the proof of purchase is a good idea also.

  5. Step 5

There is a time frame for receiving the rebate from the manufacturer written into the offer. If the rebate payment is not received within that time, write to the company at the same address the rebate was mailed. When writing, be sure to include a copy of the rebate information. Be sure to include a date by which you expect the offer to be received and be reasonable with the request.

  6. Step 6

If after writing the company, there is still no response, write to the CEO or president of the company at the headquarters. Look the company up online or call and ask for the address. Again, indicate the date by which you expect a response.

  7. Step 7

Finally, if no response is received, contact the consumer protection division of the state attorney general's office and let them investigate the situation.

Tips & Warnings
  • A rebate is a legally binding contract and therefore can be enforced in court, if needed.
  • Read the fine print on the rebate offers. Many times restrictions and time limits are placed on the rebate offer.
  • Many automobile rebates will be sent to the dealer, not directly to the consumer. The dealership cannot require the rebate to be assigned to them, but it is usually helpful in increasing the down payment of the vehicle.
