How to Focus a USB Microscope

A USB microscope is a microscope that can be attached to your computer. It is similar to a digital microscope, except a USB microscope can also be used as a traditional microscope. Your USB microscope will come with a USB cable, which you can hook to any USB port on your computer or laptop. You will also have software to load onto your computer, so you can capture and view images on your computer and save them to your hard drive or a flash drive. One challenge that people have when using USB microscopes is getting them to focus. Focusing will depend on the type of microscope you own and its abilities.

  1. How to Focus a USB Microscope

    • 1

Use the focus wheel on your USB microscope once your microscope is connected to your computer. With most models, you can also use the USB microscope without attaching it to your computer, and you would still focus with the focus wheel. One type of USB microscope with a focus wheel is the DigiMicro USB Microscope (see Resources).

Find the object that you want to magnify. Place the microscope over the object, and turn the focus wheel until you get to the desired focus that you want. Then you will want to take the picture, using the software that came with your USB microscope. Save the image to your computer once you have focused and taken it. A focus wheel is very similar to what a traditional microscope has, and a user turns the wheel to see an object magnified and in focus.

Use the USB microscope software to enhance your saved focused images to capture even clearer pictures of your object. For example, using the software, you may be able to adjust the brightness or contrast of the image you saw under the microscope. This is similar to software that comes with your digital camera to enhance your regular day-to-day pictures.

    • 4

Use the auto-focus feature on your USB microscope to focus an object you want to view on your computer. Some microscopes will automatically focus what you are trying to view. If you have the auto-focus feature on your USB microscope and you feel that it is not focusing enough for you to see the images clearly, then you could try to disable the auto-focus and manually focus the microscope with the focus wheel. It is very important to go over your instruction manual to get the most benefit out of your USB microscope.

Tips & Warnings

  • When using the focus wheel to get your microscope in focus, make sure that you keep your instrument steady. Most USB microscopes come with some sort of stand, but some users have found that if the focus wheel doesn't turn easily, the microscope can become unsteady.
