How to Display a Flag in a Case
A U.S. flag will be placed in a display case or frame if it is historic, if it was used during the funeral of a military veteran or mortally wounded soldier, or if it complements a display of medals or other patriotic items. Historic flags usually are displayed unfurled and behind glass in a traditional frame. Flags used during funerals are folded ceremoniously and can be displayed in a smaller, triangular case. Flags that complement other items should be displayed in accordance with flag etiquette.

Displaying a U.S. Flag in a Case
-
1
Fold the flag neatly with the help of another person and following proper flag etiquette. Handle it with respect and never let it touch the ground. For the U.S. flag, a 12-fold procedure is used, with each fold representing patriotic and spiritual symbols of life.
-
2
Create the triangle. A folded flag takes the form of a triangle that shows the union, or blue field, and stars. The stars lie on top of the stripes. This symbolizes that the United States began as 13 colonies and now includes 50 states that are represented by the stars.

Place the flag in the case for display. Some cases hold just the flag. No other items should be placed on or pinned to the flag. Information can be included on the case. Larger cases display the flag in the middle and provide separate sections for pins, medals and pictures.

Place the encased flag in a prominent place to honor the flag, the event and/or the person.
