1
Determine which gas station to purchase the gift card from. Find out whether the gift card receiver always buys gas from the same location or not. If the answer is yes, ask which location. According to their websites, most gas stations--including Shell, BP, Exxon and 7--offer gift cards for purchase inside their stores. Some regional gas stations also offer gas gift cards.

Determine how much you want to spend. Most gas companies have predetermined amounts dedicated to the gas gift cards they sell. For example, Shell and 76 sell gift cards in increments of $25, $50, $100 and $250. Some companies, such as the Wal-Mart-affiliated Murphy USA, allow customers to purchase gift cards for any amount inside the affiliated store and offer a discount--allowing customers to save an average of 3 cents per gallon--if the gift card is used at the pump.
