How to Use Benadryl for Cat Allergies

How to Use Benadryl for Cat Allergies thumbnail
Pet allergies happen more often than you might think.

Cats can suffer from allergies just as humans do. Your favorite furry feline may have a reaction to pollen, dust, mold, wool or household spray products. Cats that are sensitive to one or more airborne allergens or those who suffer from a skin allergy caused by direct contact with a substance may benefit from taking Benadryl (diphenhydramine), a brand name antihistamine. When pet allergies occur, your cat may scratch constantly, resulting in sores and hair loss.

Instructions

  1. Allergies Treatment for Cats

    • 1

Observe your cat's symptoms before administering Benadryl. Symptoms may range from slightly increased itching to intense scratching and skin damage. If infection is present, consult your veterinarian for advice.

    • 2

Weigh your cat in order to administer a safe and effective dosage of Benadryl. According to "The Doctor's Book of Home Remedies for Dogs and Cats," the standard dosage of Benadryl for cats is between 1 and 3 mg for every 1 lb. of your cat's body weight. For example, if your cat weighes 8 lbs., you could give him between 8 and 24 mg of Benadryl. Start with the lower dosage and increase it if you see no improvement in your cat within 3 days. Do not exceed the higher dosage without your veterinarian's approval.

    • 3

Administer Benadryl on an empty stomach, if possible. Before feeding your cat in the morning and approximately 12 hours later is suggested for the best results. Allow your cat to drink water but avoid giving him food for at least 1/2 of an hour after administering the medication.

    • 4

Wrap your cat gently in a large thick towel, making sure his front and back paws are secure. Hold your cat as you would a baby and with your hand behind his head, reach around and gently grasp his mouth on either side with your thumb and fingers. Carefully open his mouth and quickly place the piece of Benadryl tablet as far back in his throat as possible without hurting him. Then, allow your cat to close his mouth and massage the sides of his throat lightly to encourage him to swallow.

    • 5

Rub a little petroleum jelly on the tablet to make it easier to swallow. Alternately, you can use the Benadryl capsules, using the same dosage measurements and sprinkle the powder over your cat's food. While this is easier on you and your cat, it isn't always feasible if your cat is a picky eater. Choose a highly aromatic food, such as tuna, to try this technique.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make a log of your cat's allergy symptoms and his activities to determine what is causing the problem.

  • Benadryl may cause cats to have severe diarrhea. If this occurs, feed your cat some plain yogurt and make sure a litter box is constantly available.

  • If you see no improvement in your cat's symptoms after a few days, make an appointment with your veterinarian.
