Fun, free and guaranteed to keep the kids occupied for hours, making your own puppet is a great activity to do with the kids. With a lot of creativity, and a few old socks, paper bags, plastic or wooden spoons, you can make an assortment of puppet faces to enjoy. Faces can be simple and created from hand-drawn features or can be made more elaborate by including hair, wiggly eyes and more.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Brown paper lunch bag
  • Assortment of plastic and wooden spoons
  • Assortment of socks
  • Glue
  • Markers
  • Yarn
  • Plastic wiggly eyes
  1. Step 1

Create the eyes of the puppet face. Decide what type of expression you want your puppet to have. If you'd like a happy puppet, draw big round eyes. If you want a serious puppet, draw eyes that are more oval in shape. You can draw the pupils of the eyes to be looking at something, looking out of the corner, or to be looking straight ahead. Draw eyelashes and eyebrows to enhance the eyes. If you prefer, you can use plastic wiggly eyes instead of hand-drawing eyes.

  2. Step 2

Create the puppet nose. You may wish to glue a small button or pompom onto the puppet's face, or you may wish to hand-draw your puppet's nose. Noses can be drawn oval, circular, or even as a straight line across or up and down, depending on the expression you are trying to create.

  3. Step 3

Create the puppet's mouth. Decide if you want your puppet to have a smile or a frown. If you choose to create a smiling puppet, you have the option of creating it with teeth or without teeth. You can use paint or markers to draw a smile, or you can glue red yarn on your puppet face to create the smile. Small white candies can be used for teeth.

  4. Step 4

Create the puppet's ears. Glue small cutouts of paper or felt to create three-dimensional ears. You can also hand-draw ears on your puppet using markers, or paint them on.

  5. Step 5

Add facial embellishments. You may desire for your puppet to wear makeup. Create rose-colored cheeks by coloring a circle where your puppet's cheeks would be. You can use colored markers or paint for eye shadow and lipstick. You can glue paper or yarn on your puppet's head to give it hair. You can also create earrings using mini-pompoms or paper cutouts.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make an assortment of puppets at once so you can put on a puppet show. Use a spring-loaded curtain rod with a cafe-length curtain on it, and place it 1/3 of the way up in a door opening to create a homemade puppet theatre.
  • Adults should be the only ones to operate a hot glue gun.
