The reach feature of a forklift comes into play in various situations, such as when a shelving system is being used to stack pallets. During this scenario, forklift operators will use the machine's reach feature to grab pallets that are harder to grasp, such as items on a top shelf. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the forklift machine on. Prior to picking up any objects, test the forklift to familiarize yourself with how it operates. Become aware of how fast the machine moves, how it turns, how fast the forks lift and drop, and how quickly the reach moves when operated. Make note of any safety features that may come into play if the load is too heavy, or how the machine will slow down when the forks are up in the air.

    • 2

Start by picking up lighter objects, such as an empty pallet, to become comfortable with the reach function of the fork lift. When the pallet is on the forks, tilt the them back so that the load sits against the safety grate, which is located behind the forks; this keeps the load from shifting.

    • 3

Set pallets down in desired place by reversing the process. Tilt forks down over desired area and level them. Pallets should slide away from the safety grate. Set pallets down.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sit or stand at the controls and analyze their diagrams to familiarize yourself with them. The diagrams will most likely consist of pictures representing what the lever or button will do when used.

  • Prior to operating a forklift, consider signing up for a forklift training seminar to get an operating license.
