Squirrels can be perceived as a nuisance when you are trying to keep them away from your bird feeders. Rather than spend your time trying to keep squirrels out of your bird feeders, it might be advantageous to create a squirrel feeder. Providing food for the squirrels will keep them from eating the food intended for birds without forcing you to invest in "squirrel-proof" bird feeder products.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two small planks of wood, 1 inch thick, no more than 1 foot long
  • Nails or screws
  • Hammer or screwdriver
  • Hook
  • Uncooked ear of corn
  1. Step 1

Attach the two planks of wood with use nails or screws in a 90-degree angle L shape. Use several screws or nails to make sure that the two planks are firmly secured to one another.

  2. Step 2

Place a hook or some other attachment on the backside of one of the two planks. Choose an attachment based on how you intend to install the squirrel feeder. You can hang it on the side of a building using wire and nails, or you can attach your squirrel feeder to a tree using a metal hook.

  3. Step 3

Hammer a nail up into the bottom of the squirrel feeder so that the nail sticks up and out of the wood with at least a couple of inches of clearance. The sharp end of the nail should be pointing up in such a way that you can easily attach an ear of corn that will serve as food for the squirrels.

  4. Step 4

Screw the uncooked ear of corn down onto the sharp end of the nail. A single uncooked ear of corn will provide plenty of food for the squirrels that would normally come to your porch looking for bird feed.

  5. Step 5

Replace the corn cob as needed in order to keep the squirrels coming back for more.

Tips & Warnings
  • For an easy way to attach your squirrel feeder to a tree, consider forgoing the hook and simply holding the feeder up against the tree and hammering a nail directly through the back wooden plank and into the tree. While this will make it difficult for you to remove the squirrel feeder from the tree, it will also ensure that it stays put. You will have no trouble adding food to the feeder while it is nailed to the tree as long as you install it at an easily reachable height.
