One of the more popular trees that people love to grow in low frost and frost-free climates is the Blue Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia). This is a highly decorative tree with delicate fern like foliage and big panicles of bright purple flowers. The tree blooms on branches with minimal growth before the new spring foliage buds out so the trees look like purple trees straight out of a fairytale in the springtime. This tree is semi-deciduous. It thins but doesn't usually drop all its leaves in winter unless the weather drops down to freezing repeatedly. Native to Brazil and Bolivia, it will handle frosty temperatures down to 20' - 25'F once established, but will not survive much frost when young.

The Blue Jacaranda can grow from 15' to 40' tall. It likes lots of sun and doesn't mind hot temperatures. The Jacaranda prefers a well drained sandy soil and isn't really fond of winds. It handles low rainfall and dry air making it a good choice for the drought tolerant landscape. If it is happy where it is growing it can form a truly spectacular tree.

The Jacaranda is not a great tree to grow where cars are likely park beneath since the flowers drop heavily and are sticky. Large seed pods also form and will eventually drop so this is not a neat, clean tree and will require some clean up.

Grow the Jacaranda mimosifolia where its showy purple flowers can be seen easily and where falling litter will not be a problem. It is probably one of the most stunning trees you can have in the garden when it is in flower, and its feathery leaves make it an asset to the landscape all year round.

My kids called the pods "turtles" cause they looked like 2" brown turtle shells, they would even paint them. It was messy for a month when the flowers were falling, but the rest of the year it was a wonderful canopy that covered a large part of my backyard. Great for southern Calif. yards. I miss it, and want to plant another in it's place!

Ours was huge, wonderful dappled shade. We loved it, but whoever planted it put it too close to the brick fence, and we had to remove it after 20 years of enjoying it.

NOTHING grows under it! makes a huge mess - beautiful to look at but that is it.

I plant some Jacaranda seeds here in Palu, Indonesia and it grows. already a month... hopefully will keep growing...
