Freelance Writing

As a freelance writer, you are directly in charge of your monthly income. So, why do you keep accepting those low paying freelance writing jobs? If you are as good a writer as you claim to be, you should be getting paid accordingly. Stop chasing the low paying freelance writing jobs; stop working 10 hour days for minimal compensation and start landing lucrative freelance writing jobs.

Things You'll Need:

  • Resume
  • Samples
  1. Step 1

Prepare your resume. Did you think you were through with resumes when you left the corporate world behind? If so, you were very wrong. A freelance writer needs a resume because people and companies who offer freelance writing jobs and gigs want to know that their freelance writers are educated, professional and have experience within the field of the job. The best way to create a freelance writer’s resume is to use the resumes of other freelance writers as examples. Do a quick Google search for “freelance writer’s resume” and click on the image results, this will allow you to view actual resumes of freelance writers.

  2. Step 2

Pull out your best samples. When you apply for a freelance writing job, you are going to be asked for samples. Try to make your samples as relevant to the freelance writing job that you are applying for. Make sure that they are professional quality samples. If you’ve proven to be a mediocre writer why would anyone hire you for their freelance projects?

  3. Step 3

Market your services. My preferred method of marketing my freelance writing services is cold emailing. I track down a set of bloggers that appear to be in need of a writer, find their contact information and send them a quick and professional query. Before I send off an email, I try to guesstimate whether they can afford my rates by looking at their blog design. If the blog looks as if it was professionally designed by a web designer, they can likely afford my services. After all, web designers don’t come cheap. If they’ve got the budget for a designer, they probably have an adequate budget for a freelance writer.

  4. Step 4

Apply to jobs. Craigslist has been slammed by many veteran freelance writers because of the low paying gigs and nonpaying customers. However, there are some hidden gems on Craigslist for freelance writers. Make it a point to apply for at least five high paying freelance writing jobs per day. This is when your samples and resume will come into play.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stay away from freelance writing jobs that promise big rewards for minimal effort, 99.9% of the time these freelance job listings will be scams.

on 6/4/2009 Please disregard the comment below this. It is clearly a scam. Any service that requires you to pay just to look at freelance writing jobs is not legitimate.
