Grocery auctions are a recession savvy way to save money on food and household supplies. Grocery auctions are occurring with more frequency across the country as people are looking for ways to stretch their grocery budget. Items sold at grocery auctions are typically nearing their expiration date, damaged, dented, or surplus inventory. If you want to pay a fraction of the money you spend at the grocery store, find a grocery auction near your home and start bidding.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start your grocery auction search by visiting the National Auctioneers Association website. Almost 5000 professional auctioneers list the dates, times, and types of auctions that they have planned on the NAA website. Search in your city or state to find a local grocery auction.

  2. Step 2

Call local auctioneers that you find listed in your phone book to inquire about potential grocery auctions. If your local auctioneers are not currently doing grocery auctions, you may want to suggest the idea of auctioning food and household supplies.

  3. Step 3

Look in the classifieds in your local newspaper to see if there are any grocery auctions scheduled. Additionally, check online classifieds, such as Craigslist.

  4. Step 4

Search for wholesale grocery auctions online if you cannot find any local grocery auctions. You can bid online for large quantities of food items and household supplies through companies that sell commercial surplus inventory and government surplus assets. As always, when making financial transactions online, you should verify the legitimacy of the company before you trust them with your financial information.
