Step 1
Skip the traditional loaf of bread entirely and head to the raw grain section of your grocery store. While ducks devour the bread that people feed them, it actually has little to no nutritional value for them and is hard for their bodies to digest. Instead, purchase raw grains such as wheat and millet. You will find that buying a large bag of grains is actually even cheaper than a loaf of bread!
-
Step 2
Head to a location where you know there to be a good-sized duck or goose population. Scope out the area before you start the feeding. When these animals realize that you have food and are there to feed them, a crowd quickly gathers and you may find yourself surrounded. Have an exit strategy in case the duck and goose crowd gets too big or too aggressive in the feeding frenzy.

Step 3
If you are going with a group of children or more than one person, bring a small tuperware or other container for each person to hold and refill so that one person is not left holding a big bag of wheat and you can spread out a little if you so desire.

on 6/5/2009 Sure look like they're having fun. I wonder if oatmeal would be OK.

on 6/5/2009 I had no idea that the old crusts of bread were hard on ducks. Now I feel bad I fed it to them.

on 6/5/2009 When I was a kid, we used to throw corn on the ice for them in the winter, but switched to bread in the summer because it floats.

on 6/5/2009 Cracked corn is better than whole corn, but it is low in protein and doesn't do a whole lot for them nutritionally. It is best when used in combination with other raw grains.

on 6/5/2009 Feeding the ducks after our Thanksgiving and christmas, and Easter feasts is a family tradition. Thanks for teaching us how to do it in a more healthful way for the birds!
