How to Buy a Cell Phone for a Senior

Consider a senior's needs when choosing her cell phone.

Cell phones with features such as GPS, text messaging and Internet access can simplify our daily lives. But for senior citizens unfamiliar with the technology, all of those extras might be confusing and unnecessary. When choosing a cell phone for a senior, keep in mind what the user needs and any difficulties he might have.

1. Ask the senior what features he wants. While the ability to take photos may appeal to some seniors, web access, GPS and video games may not appeal to seniors. Many just want and need to be able to make calls, either in cases of emergency or just to chat with family and friends.

2. Search for cell phones that are designed specifically for seniors. Manufacturers recognize that tiny buttons and small displays might not be for everyone, so some offer cell phones that have large buttons or on-screen buttons that can be adjusted to the desired size. Some options repeat numbers as the user dials, too, which helps seniors with visual difficulties know if they've pushed the wrong button. These phones often also are hearing-aid compatible.

3. Search for a phone that has an easy-to-use emergency button. This is crucial for seniors who have health issues that go beyond vision and hearing impairments. Many phones designed with seniors in mind will have this feature, but not all do.

4. Search for a cell phone plan that best meets the senior's needs. Many cell phones designed for seniors are "unlocked," meaning you can use them with the carrier of your choice. Some offer discounts for AARP members, and may include a free phone.
