A sure fire way of ruining a great day outside is to come in contact with poison ivy. The itch that results from exposure can be unbearable. The trick is to treat it quickly and effectively. The oil from the plant spreads easily so all clothing and any thing that is touched after coming in contact with the plant should be washed or sterilized. If you act fast, you should be able to get the itching under control and speed the healing. The following are steps you can take to get relief from poison ivy itch.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Very warm water
  • Jewelweed
  • 1 Cup oatmeal or baking soda
  • 1/2 Cup water
  • Aloe Vera
  • 1 small bowl
  • 1 spoon
  • Lightweight, breathable clothing
  1. Step 1

Step into the shower and gradually increase the temperature of the water until it is very warm. Be careful not to scald the skin but the very warm water will kill the itch. DO NOT bathe. The goal is to rinse as much of the poisonous oil off of your body. Not continue to soak in it

  2. Step 2

Pat body dry (put towel directly in washer afterward) and rub the juice from the stem of a jewel wood plant on affected areas.

  3. Step 3

No jewelweed? Pour 1 cup of baking soda or oatmeal into small bowl (Regular oats not instant or flavored). Add ½ cup of water to bowl. Mix together to make a thick paste of water and oatmeal or baking soda and slather on affected areas. This paste will help relieve itch and help pull the remaining poison from the pores in the skin.

  4. Step 4

Rinse paste off of skin after 30 minutes or earlier if itch has subsided.

  5. Step 5

Dress in light breathable clothing to remain comfortable during the healing process. Tight, constricting clothing will only irritate the affected areas

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid poison ivy itch altogether. Remember, "leaves of 5 or 3, leave them be"!

on 5/29/2009 This sounds so much better than my current remedy, bleach. I get poison ivy by just thinking about it, so hopefully this will help with the suffering.
