How to Remove a Windows Explorer Virus

By Andrew Smith

A Windows Explorer virus can slow down your computer, keep you from being able to use the shortcuts found on your desktop, and even cause you to lose files and folders. While these viruses can be very annoying, they are, for the most part, no more difficult to remove than any other virus that makes its way onto your computer. By downloading the right software programs and knowing what to delete, you can remove a Windows Explorer virus quite easily.

Step 1

Begin by deleting all of your temporary Internet files. The process for doing this will vary depending on which browser you use (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc.). To delete temporary files through My Computer, open My Computer and then open up the "C" drive. Open the "Windows" folder. Scroll down and open the "Temp" folder, and delete everything that is in that folder. Do not delete the folder itself, though.

Step 2

Download Spybot. This anti-malware program has been updated on several occasions to locate and delete any harmful infections on your computer (see Resources). Right after you download and install the program, search for any available updates. Then scan your computer with Spybot.

Step 3

Download AVG Anti-Virus. AVG is a highly rated anti-virus program and can be used for free for an entire year (see Resources). Just as with Spybot, you should search for AVG updates before you scan your computer. Once you're done, you may need to restart your computer.
