How to Use an MIG Welding Helmet

MIG welding uses very hot gases that produce extremely radiant glows that can blind humans. A MIG welding helmet has a very dark glass visor that blocks this intense light and protects the welder's vision. The shield is so dark that you can not see through them in normal light conditions. The helmet visor must be opened so the welder can see to set up the weld, then closed right before the weld is made. There are many types but the best is operated by a chin strap.

Instructions

    • 1

First put the helmet on and tighten the rear head band knob so the helmet fits securely on your head and does not flop around. Shake your head slightly to make sure the fit is snug.

    • 2

Attach the chin strap around your chin while the visor shield is down. Make sure it is tight but not uncomfortable.

    • 3

Open your jaw, moving your chin down and forward to raise the visor shield. Look through the clear glass lens to line up your weld and get ready to strike the arc.

    • 4

Close your jaw to shut the dark visor shield. It will close automatically. Complete your weld with the visor closed.

Tips & Warnings

  • An electronic welding helmet automatically adjusts to changes in the light, turning darker when the arc is on to protect your vision. However, it will turn on while you are using a grinder. It involves no manual operation.
