How to Pull a Long Wheelie

When it comes to trick-riding on a bicycle, there few moves more famous than the wheelie, and few tricks more impressive--except, perhaps, a long wheelie! This move involves not only popping the front wheel off the ground, but continuing to keep the bike in the air for some time balanced on only the rear wheel. Performing the long wheelie is a matter of mastering the skills of a standard front wheel pop.

Things You'll Need

  • Multispeed bike in good working condition Protective bike gear (helmet, knee and elbow pads)

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a good place to practice your wheelie. You can expect some spills and falls while you're learning, so it's best to practice in a large area clear of other bikers, vehicles, pedestrians or dangerous obstacles. If you can practice somewhere with soft ground--say, a field with short grass rather than a concrete parking lot--this will also help minimize injury.

    • 2

Put on your helmet and pads and tighten them snugly, checking as you do so for any cracks or structural problems. Be sure they fit securely and comfortably.

    • 3

Set your bike seat lower than you normally position it. This will help keep your gravity center lower, which will help your balance during the wheelie.

    • 4

Put the bike in a low gear and pedal forward at a moderate pace.

    • 5

Lift the handlebars to remove the front wheel from the ground and, at the same time, squeeze your back wheel brake. As the front of the bike comes up, lean slightly back, straighten your arms, and shift forward on your seat.

    • 6

Practice to improve balance and lengthen the amount of time you can keep the front wheel in the air. Start with the smallest and shortest possible lifts and gradually increase the time and height. Maintain balance by shifting your body around and pumping and releasing the rear brake.

Tips & Warnings

  • For the best wheelies, make sure your bike is in good condition. Make especially sure that the gears are well oiled and the rear tire has no flat spots.

  • Learning bike tricks always carries a risk of injury. Minor injuries are likely, and major injuries are a possibility.
