How to Install Violin Strings

How to Install Violin Strings thumbnail
Replacing a violin string is simple, once you know how.

Beginner violinists often have a teacher tune a violin and replace broken strings. But at a certain point in a violinist's development as a musician, he or she must learn to replace strings. Violin strings are quite inexpensive, so if a few break while learning to change them, it isn't the end of the world.

Instructions

    • 1
Strings from left to right: G, D, A and E.

Purchase violin strings at a music store. You will need one of each in the following notes: G, D, A and E. Purchase an extra set, just in case. Looking straight at the violin, the G string will be on the left, followed by D, A and E in that order.

    • 2
The black screws are called fine tuners.

Insert the end with the small metal ring into the fine tuner on the tailpiece. Loosen the fine tuner screw to avoid placing too much pressure on the string.

    • 3
The strings wind around the pegs in the pegbox.

Thread the other end of the string into the small hole in the correct peg. The G string threads into the left peg closest to the fingerboard. The D string goes in the other peg on the left. The A string goes through the peg on the right, closest to the scroll. The E string threads through the remaining peg.

    • 4
Adjust the pegs to tune the violin.

Wind the pegs gently to pull the strings taut. Be careful not to wind them too tightly, or they will snap. Be sure each string is nestled in its own groove on the bridge.

After tuning, the violin is ready to play!

Tune each string by adjusting the pegs. Make small adjustments with the fine tuners, until the pitch is clear.

Tips & Warnings

  • The E string is the thinnest and most fragile string. Use extra care when replacing the E string.
