Whether you are bottling your own wine or purchasing wine to be included in gift baskets, a creative label is a "must have." Instructions

  1. Design with Publisher

    • 1
      Original publisher template.

Microsoft Publisher is a graphic design-oriented program that enables people with little or no graphic design experience to produce creative, effective designs. If you are new to Publisher, hover your mouse pointer over the icons on the toolbars to see the text label for the icons.

From the Publisher Catalog, select Labels, then Borders Shipping Label. Click Start Wizard, then click Finish. You don't need to fill in the Information section.

Delete the Business Name box, the line underneath the box and the logo by clicking the items and hitting the Scissors (cut) icon.

    • 3

Using the the Label Wizard dialog box on the left side of the screen, select Color Schemes and click on the Burgundy scheme.

    • 4
Change the color scheme and add text.

Click the Primary Business Address box and change text. Choose a different color for the text using the Font Color icon. The colors from the Burgundy color scheme will be displayed at the top of the dialogue box. Next change Mailing Address box using the same steps. Click and drag both boxes to the middle of the label.

    • 5

From the Insert menu, select Picture, then Clip Art. In the Insert Clip Art dialog box, type in a key word like "wine" to bring up all clip art in the category. Choose the image you'd like to use, select the image and click Insert Clip. If you'd like to add additional images, repeat this step.

    • 6

Change the size of the clip art by clicking it and dragging one of the corner resize boxes in (to reduce size) or out (to increase size).

    • 7

Clip art is inserted using a box shape. To get text to wrap closer to the image, click the Wrap Text to Picture icon.

    • 8
      Here is a finished label.

Add any additional text to the label using the Text Frame Tool. The default setting for a text box in Publisher is for the box to have a white "fill." Delete the fill color by selecting the Fill Color icon, then choosing No Fill.

When you're satisfied with your design, save and print on 3.33 by 4 inch shipping labels. You get six labels per sheet.

Tips & Warnings

  • When using ink-jet printers to produce your labels, make sure the ink doesn't smear when you or your recipients handle the jars. An inexpensive, but effective method of "sealing" the ink is to use super-hold hairspray. After the ink on the labels is dry, hold the hairspray can about 12 inches away from the sheet of labels and spray a thin coat of hairspray on the labels. Let the hairspray dry and repeat to make smear-resistant labels.
