Instructions

    • 1

Purchase 1½ yards (or more for larger blankets) of fleece fabric and matching thread.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of fleece, 18½ inches square. The fleece is two-sided, so there is no need to worry about which side is the right side. Pin the two squares together. Sew a ¼-inch seam all the way around, except for a 3-inch opening. Turn the fleece square right side out through the opening. Hand sew the opening shut.

    • 3

Cut any printed salvage off the sides of your remaining fleece fabric. Even up the fleece into a rectangle by cutting off any extra fabric.

    • 4

Locate the center of the top of the rectangle (this will be the top of the blanket). Find the center of the fleece square. Match up the two centers, and pin them together. Pin the rest of the square top to the blanket top. Also, pin straight down on each side of the fleece square. Sew a ¼-inch seam along the top and sides of the square. Leave the bottom of the square open.

    • 5

Fold the sides of the blanket, on either side of the square (pillow), under to the back. At the bottom of the blanket, fold it upwards and then tuck it into the pillow.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fleece does not ravel as other fabrics do. Therefore, it is not necessary to finish off the edges of the blanket. However, you may do so, if you like, before attaching the pillow section. The blanket can be finished off by folding the edges under and sewing them. The edges may also be finished with a zigzag stitch, or by crocheting around the edges. You may also cut a fringe on all the edges with your scissors.
