How to Make Silk Flower Hair Barrettes

Creating a silk flower hair barrette is an easy way to add some flair to your hair. All you need is a silk flower, a hair clip and a little hot glue. Add some ribbon or extra flowers to dress it up.

Things You'll Need

• Metal hair barrette, clip or hair comb
• Silk flowers of your choice
• Glue gun with low-heat glue sticks
• Ribbon, 1/2 inch wide, 6 inches long to match your flowers (optional)

Instructions

1. Choose the hair accessory you want to use, such as a metal spring barrette, hair clip or hair comb. Spring barrettes work the best.

2. Choose your silk flowers. Roses and daisies work very well; a sprig of silk baby's breath adds a touch of formality for a special occasion.

3. Take apart the spring barrette by pinching each end of the barrette together so that the top (straight) piece pops off. This is the part of the barrette that you glue the flowers to.

4. Ready the silk flowers by taking them off of their stems and removing any leaves, except the part of the stem that holds the flower together underneath it. Plug the glue gun in and heat up the glue. Low-heat glue sticks are best to use with silk and plastic flowers, because the higher heat glue tends to melt some of the delicate plastics of the flowers.

5. Glue the flowers by squirting some glue onto the bottom of the flower--not too much, as it will glob up the hair barrette. (If you do get too much glue on the barrette, pick or scrape the excess off after it cools and solidifies.) Place the flower with the glue on it on the bar of the barrette and hold for several seconds. Repeat this step for any additional flowers and/or babies breath.

6. Tie the ribbon in a knot and loop it like you do for shoelaces. Glue it to the barrette in a complementary place around the flowers. Wait for the hot glue to cool and harden and then reassemble the barrette.

Tips & Warnings

• Be careful not to get hot glue on your skin. Always remember to unplug your glue gun as soon as you are finished using it.
