Step 1
First, you should decide what type of dinner you are having. Certain wines complement certain types of food. Red wines go well with meat, beef and heartier foods. White wine goes better the fish, chicken and pasta.

Step 2
If you want a GREAT wine, expect to pay a little more than regular. This doesn't mean to order the most expensive wine they have, and expect it to be wonderful. This only means that the price tag might be a little bigger for better wines. You shouldn't pay top price every time you order wine. Cheaper wines can be just as great. Save the expensive wines for special occasions.

Step 3
Ask your waiter for recommendations. High end restaurant will educate their servers on what wine goes better with the meals for that night. If they seem dumbfounded by your request, ask them to check with the chef as to what they would recommend with your meal. Ask questions and follow other's advice.
