A Family Budget Spreadsheet can act as a guide for organizing household expenses. This spreadsheet can be made flexible to meet your family budget needs.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • computer
  • internet
  • excel spreadsheet software
  • paper
  • pen
  • printer
  • family budget records
  1. Step 1

First decide on a budget format for your spreadsheet that meets your family income schedule.

  2. Step 2

Second list your family income sources as your top category on your budget spreadsheet.

  3. Step 3

Next group your all your family expenses into budget categories starting with must pay and then prioritizing down your spreadsheet by need.

  4. Step 4

Then include a category at the bottom of your spreadsheet for Miscellaneous Family emergency savings and liquid cash on hand. Your family should have about three months income in this fund at all times.

  5. Step 5

Its a good idea to break your family budget spreadsheet into two columns representing proposed family budget goals and actual family budget to chart and compare income and expenses.

  6. Step 6

Project your family income first, followed by must pay, then emergency, and then project other budget needs by priority on your spreadsheet.

  7. Step 7

Subtract all proposed expenses from proposed income to get a projected balance and use this as a guide to chart your actual amounts and compare to make adjustments.

Tips & Warnings
  • Project income lower and expenses higher to avoid overspending.
  • Make cuts on lower priority family budget needs to help balance overages.
  • Set a family allowance to help keep on budget for low priority needs.
