Things You'll Need:
- patience
- a dog
- some sort of object used to let you know he wants out.
-
Step 1
Your dog needs to be trained to go outside, or it won't work. The dog isn't going to want outside if it goes in the house.
-
Step 2
Set up the identifier (in my case it was a bell) in an area near where the dog usually goes when it wants out or by the door you always put it out from.
-
Step 3
Each time you let the dog out, show it how to use the object. I would hit the bell a few times to show him and then I would take him and nudge his nose on it before I let him out.
You might grab a paw and push the object with it. Let the dog know that you want them to do what you are doing when they want out. -
Step 4
Let the dog out.
-
Step 5
Continue this every time you let your dog outside until they start to do it on their own. When they do it make sure you give them a little praise.
-
Step 6
It helps to sort of ignore the dog once you can tell he/she knows how to work the system. This way he is compelled to do what you want him to. If he just walks to the door like normal and you let him out, he isn't learning.
Eventually it just becomes habit and they will do it even if you are watching.
