Don't be afraid of doing a dog DNA test

Doing a home dog DNA test is a wonderful way of learning exactly what breeds make up your pup. Learning this gives you more insight as to why your dog acts the way he or she does. Amazingly some people are afraid of doing a dog DNA test, perhaps they think is it is painful to the dog or requires drawing blood. Rest assured a dog DNA test is none of these, it's actually a very simple procedure. Here's how a dog DNA test is done.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A dog (breed unknown)
  • A dog DNA test kit
  1. Step 1

Make sure the dog hasn't eaten for at least 1/2 hour, preferably an hour before you administer the dog DNA test. I'd also make sure the dog drinks some water too.

  2. Step 2

Unwrap the dog DNA test kit and remove the swab. The swab from the dog DNA test kit will be used to collect epithelial cells from inside the dogs cheek.

  3. Step 3

Gently rub the swab on the inside of the dogs mouth against the cheek. Picture using the swab as if you were brushing the dogs teeth except with the bristles pointed away from the teeth. This is the most important part of taking the dog DNA test, make sure you rub the inside of the cheek for at least 20 seconds.

  4. Step 4

After you rub the swab from the dog DNA test kit immediately remove it from the dogs mouth and place it in the plastic bag from the dog dna test kit.

  5. Step 5

Complete the information and contact form from the dog DNA test kit. Make sure the info is correct.

  6. Step 6

Mail the completed dog DNA test kit back to the testing company. You should receive the results of the dog DNA test in about 2-3 weeks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before administering the dog DNA test
  • Your dogs mouth must be clean and free of food particles before doing the dog DNA test

on 5/18/2009 We've used all the different places that do the canine DNA and we prefer the DNA Diagnostics Center. They are the ones you see on TV doing the human DNA but they also have a Pet DNA site http://www.vetdnacenter.com/ We have found them to be accurate and reasonably priced...and they just need a cheek swab sample.
