Things You'll Need:
- Bicycle Pump
-
Step 1
~Check Air Pressure~
Check the air pressure in your tires before every ride. Low air pressure is one of the most common culprits of flat tires on bikes as it causes the tube to pinch under the load of the rider and create a snake bite style puncture (2 identical punctures side by side). Likewise, make sure you don't over-inflate your bike tires as this can cause a blowout. The recommended PSI for most tires can be found printed on the outer wall of the tire. -
Step 2
~Inspect Your Tires~
Inspect your tires before every ride. Check for foreign objects between the sidewall of the tire and the rim. Little things like tiny wood chips can work their way into the tire and quickly cause a flat. -
Step 3
~Regularly Change Your Tires~
Just like a car, it's a good idea to change your bike's tires on a regular basis. You can't ride on one pair forever because the walls will get worn and allow foreign objects easy access to the tube. -
Step 4
~Take it Easy!~
Know the limits of your bike and its tires and ride appropriately. Don't hop curbs with a road bike for example. Hard landings and rough terrain are likely to cause flats if your bike isn't built for that type of riding. -
Step 5
~Store the Bike Inside~
Prevent unnecessary weather checking of your tires by simply storing your bike inside, or at least out of the weather. Excessive temperatures, sunlight, snow, rain, etc can increase the wear of the tires and your chances of getting a flat tire.
