Many home remedies exist to repel aphids and other bugs from houseplants, but most often, these methods involve using soaps and other substances harmful to the plant itself. With a simple recipe using Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap, you can create a quick and easy harmless mixture to repel your summer bug woes!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Buy a bottle of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap in the Peppermint fragrance. This brand of soap is one of the few pure castile soaps on the market, and its uses are endless. In addition, the ingredients found in this particular brand are all natural, detergent free, and are perfectly safe for the environment (unlike most soaps). The soap is ultra-concentrated, and can be found at most health food stores. Using other brands of castile soap is an option, though the results will most likely be lackluster.

  2. Step 2

Dilute 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of the soap in a liter of room-temperature water, and pour this mixture into a spray bottle. The ratio can be slightly stronger, if desired.

  3. Step 3

Lightly spray this mixture onto your houseplants, making sure to mist the bottom of the leaves in particular to rid the plant of any aphids. The ingredients in Dr. Bronner's soap act as a natural bug repellent, and the peppermint fragrance is both pleasant and non-intrusive. Also, don't worry about being precise while spraying the mixture. It can also be used as a household cleaner, so making a mess isn't an issue!

  4. Step 4

This particular mixture of soap is safe for the environment, so feel free to experiment with the use of your homemade bug repellent! In addition, the peppermint fragrance is reported to have further bug repellent abilities when used as a body wash during your daily bathing techniques. Experiment with what works best, and have a bug-free summer!

Tips & Warnings
  • Though Dr. Bronner's castile soap will give the best results, you can try experimenting with other gentle brands.
  • Care for your houseplants throughout the summer, and make sure they are properly watered.
  • Though this mixture should be harmless, be wary of overusing it as a precaution.
