How to Use Custom Photoshop Brushes

If you buy or download custom Adobe photoshop brushes, do you know how to install and use them?

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Adobe Photoshop any version
  • Photoshop Brush
  1. Step 1

    To load a brush set in Photoshop;
    First you need the copy the brush file into the Brush folder. Please put the .abr file you've downloaded, into the correct folder just copy and paste it.
    For Mac OS X /Users/{username}/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS4/Presets/Brushes
    It can be different version of Photoshop, it does not matter
    For Windows C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop\Presets\Brushes.
    Open the Brushes Palette (Windows > Palettes > Show Brushes).
    Select Load Brushes from the fly out menu on the Brush Palette.
    You should keep your brushes in a sub directory of Photoshop in a folder named brushes.
    From the Brushes Palette in Photoshop, click the small arrow in the upper right corner of the palette, and choose load brushes.
    Locate the directory where you have stored the brushes (.abr files) and select the file you want and click "load".
    The brush set will be added to the current brushes. .
    If is zip file first unzip it, then as .abr file copy the file into brush folder such as C:\programfiles\adobe\photoshop\presets\brushes

    Step by Step Install Photoshop Brush
    1. Open your photoshop software. Take a look at your toolbar

    Click on the photoshop brush icon on the box that contains all of the icons.

    Then go to the navigation bar for the brushes.
    It is located under the main navigation bar (the bar that contains file, edit, image, layer, select etc.
    Click on the icon that says 'brush

    Then click on the arrow next to the icon, which looks like a »

    - In a small box which contains brushes will appear. Click on the little arrows in that box.

    When you click a menu is going to appear.
    - In that menu bar click on load brushes

    How To Change Brush Size?

    Go to the Options palette (press the triangle near the word Brush)
    and enter the required brush size or move the slider "Master Diameter" to the required position.


    * You can use the mouse wheel to adjust the size.
    Click the input field and move the mouse wheel to change the value.
    To change the Brush Size faster, without opening the Brush Size palette,
    use the hot keys [ and ] for reducing and increasing the tip size correspondingly.
    The step is +/- 10px.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have a lot of custom brushes, it's a good idea to make a backup copy of your brush set.
  • Brush sets are saved in your Photoshop program folder.
  • They have an .abr extension.
  • You can make zip folder of your extra brush sets and save it.
  • It is better to save brush sets in a zip folder, it takes less space in your computer.
