How to Insulate an Attic Fan

A fan can be added to an attic to help circulate warm air when when an air conditioner is being used during the summer months. An attic fan will bring cool air in from the outside to reduce much of the super hot air that can collect in an attic. When an attic fan is installed. it can be located in the roof as well as the gable ends. Once the fan has been installed, it needs to be insulated, which can be done in just a few steps.       Spray foam insulation around the edges of the of the fan enclosure. Insert the nozzle into the tip that is on the top of the can to start using it. Spray the foam over the edges of the fan and leave enough room for the foam to expand.

      Cut a piece of Styrofoam insulation to place over the fan. Measure the dimensions of the fan, then mark a piece of Styrofoam insulation where it will need to be cut. Use a hacksaw to cut the insulation to the needed size. Affix the piece of Styrofoam over the fan with construction adhesive.

      Place a piece of fiberglass insulation around the fan if it has been installed in a rafter. Measure the length of the rafter beam and cut a piece of fiberglass insulation the same length. Use a staple gun to secure the insulation to the studs. Cut an opening around the fan with a utility knife after the insulation has been installed.

      Use caulk or sealant to seal gaps around the fan. Cut the tip of the tube with a utility knife and then place it in the caulking gun. Press the trigger on the gun to force the push plate into the tube to begin caulking. Run a bead around the edges of the fan or enclosure to seal any air gaps.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear a long-sleeved shirt, gloves, a mask as well as eye protection whenever you are working with fiberglass insulation. All materials can be found at either a Lowe's or Home Depot store.

  • Spray foam insulation will harden quickly and can only be used for one job.
