How to Use a Coude Catheter
Coude catheters are generally used to aid in urination for men who have enlarged prostates or suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia. Coude catheters can also sometimes be used for women, although a coude tip is usually designed to aid in permeating a small opening.
Instructions
-
-
1
Wash hands with antibacterial soap. Open the sterile coude catheter packaging.
-
2
Sterilize the area where the catheter will be inserted, using proper medical sterilization techniques.
-
-
3
Slowly insert the coude catheter with the tip facing up. Try to keep the catheter as straight as possible when you are inserting it, although you might have to rotate the catheter as you insert it.
-
4
Wait until urine begins to flow into the catheter. Inflate the coude catheter balloon with sterile saline solution.
-
5
If the coude catheter slides out, even if you are getting urine flow coming from the catheter, the catheter is inserted wrong. Start the process again with a new catheter.
