How to Make Estimates for a Wrought Iron Fence

Decorative Wrought Iron Fence

Fences made from wrought iron are a popular alternative to traditional wooden or chain link fences. They offer a much higher level of security and are likely to last for several decades. Though they can be more expensive then other types of fences, it is possible to construct a wrought iron fence at a reasonable price if you take the time to perform a thorough estimate. Creating an estimate on your own helps you evaluate prices from contractors while preparing an accurate budget.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the yard or area where the fence will go. Take measurements along all sides of the yard that will need a section of fence.

    • 2

Create a sketch of what the finished fence should look like. Include any special designs as well as dimensions. You'll need not only the lengths you determined in Step 1, but also the height of the fence and the diameter of the poles.

    • 3

Take your sketch to a local metalworking company and get a price on materials. To get the lowest price possible, ask for unpainted iron and tell them you'll take care of welding and installation on your own.

    • 4

Calculate the cost of installation. This will include digging the posts, constructing the fence and painting the iron, if applicable. You can have a local fence contractor give you a price on this work or perform the work yourself. If you do it yourself, you'll need to rent a post hole digger and a spot welder, and purchase paint and brushes, so include these costs as well.

    • 5

Add all of your costs together to make a total estimated price. Include the cost of the fence materials, installation, tool rentals and paint.

Tips & Warnings

  • To help you compare prices, get several estimates on materials from different sources.

  • Spot welders are fairly easy to use, but if this is your first experience with one, practice on a piece of scrap metal first.
