How to Register a Website With Search Directories
One of the most powerful ways to get visitors to a website is from search engine results page links. Also becoming quite popular are "search directories". Unlike search engines, search directories are hierarchically arranged websites by category. Though not as popular as search engines, people are increasingly using search directories. There are many search directories, and submitting a website to them for inclusion in their database is usually free.

Submitting A URL

1
The two most popular search directories currently are Google's http://www.dmoz.org (free to submit a URL) and Yahoo's www.search.yahoo.com/dir (fee required). We will use a general overview for this step-by-step submission process, which is similar to that of many search directories.
-
2
Look for the link "Suggest A URL" on the homepage of dmoz (or whatever search directory you want to register with). Click on it.
-
-
3
Be prepared to enter information about your website. When submitting a website for registration with a search engine, you only need to enter your website's home address. However, submitting a website to a search directory requires entering information about the site.
-
4
Select a single most relevant category for your website, and enter it. Only one subject or topic for your site is permitted.
-
5
Write a descriptive title that explains the overall theme of your website, as you may be asked to enter a site title.
-
6
Type in a detailed description of your site in the description box provided. Do not place any advertising or sales information here, just an accurate representation of your website's content.
-
7
Enter your email address in the appropriate field.
-
8
Allow several months for your website to appear in the search directory's database. Search directories are maintained by humans, unlike search engines, which get their information from software "robots" that scour the Web. Therefore, it takes more time for sites to be evaluated for inclusion in a directory.
-
9
Resubmit your site if after several months it does not appear in the directory's database. There is no guarantee that a suggested site will be accepted by the directory. Live editors are not interested in listing every single site on the Web for each category. Their goal is to include sites that are useful and beneficial to searchers. But if your site doesn't appear, resubmit it a second time.

10
Submit your URL to as many search directories as you can find. In addition to dmoz, other popular directories include: http://www.123-add-masters.com, http:// www.addme.com, http://www.einet.net, http://www.gimpsy.com, http://www.illuminate.com and http://www.jayde.com.
