Making a hovercraft out of a leaf blower is a quick and easy project. This hovercraft is powered by a leaf blower. This hovercraft is large enough to bear the weight of a person (depending on the weight of the person and the power of the blower).

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Half sheet of plywood (cut at the lumber yard)
  • Nail
  • Hammer (for nailing and removing the nail)
  • Cotton string
  • Grease pen
  • Jigsaw
  • Leaf blower
  • Hack saw (to cut the leaf blower)
  • Hole saw (if applicable -- see steps below)
  • One sheet of thick-mil plastic painter's drop cloth
  • Construction stapler and staples
  • Gorilla Glue
  • Two extension cords
  • Smooth, dry, level surface to float over (like a school hallway)
  1. Step 1

Put a nail into the center of a sheet of plywood. Get a string and tie a loop at the end. Let the string out 2 feet on either side. Get a grease pen and tie the string around the tip of the pen so that it allows the pen to write on the plywood. Shorten the string length so that with the string outstretched, the end of the pen tip meets the edge closest to the center. Use the pen/string to trace around the plywood to make a perfect circle. Remove the nail and use the jigsaw to cut along this line.

  2. Step 2

Cut the end of your leaf blower (or disconnect the attachment) so that the opening is circular. Measure this opening and use it to select the size of hole-saw that you need; then cut a hole so this blower can be inserted into the plywood base.

  3. Step 3

Make the hole in the center of the plywood circle. If there is not a hole-saw big enough to cut the circle the size that you need, trace a circle around the opening of the leaf blower with a pencil and use a jigsaw to cut the hole. If there is a hole-saw large enough to make the hole, use this attachment on the end of a drill to drill the hole.

  4. Step 4

Get a sheet of thick-mil plastic drop cloth and put the plywood circle on top of it. Fold the edges of the drop cloth up over the edges of the plywood circle. Use the construction stapler 2 inches in from the edge on the top of the plywood. Make sure that the staples are holding the plastic tight against the plywood. Use Gorilla Glue to further seal the plastic onto the plywood.

  5. Step 5

Jam the leaf blower into the hole in the center of the plywood and seal the edge around the wood where it meets the leaf blower. Use Gorilla Glue to seal any gaps.

  6. Step 6

Use a nail to puncture holes in the plastic on the underside of the plywood. Make sure that the nail holes are one inch apart on either side as well as above and below the previously poked holes.

  7. Step 7

Place the flat side of the plywood on smooth, level ground. Turn on the leaf blower and watch the hovercraft hover. Turn it off again and then mount it before turning it on again. Balance on the hovercraft to float on a cushion of air, but do not stand on the hovercraft.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add another leaf blower to propel yourself forward. If the plastic will not "swell" when the blower is turned on, try loosening the plastic and reattaching it so that there is more space for the plastic air cushion to swell.
  • Do not stand on this device. Do not operate this device on wet surfaces or near water. Only use electrical leaf blowers, and do not go beyond the reach of the electrical cords/extension cords. Wear goggles and follow all instructions and warnings that came with your operating tools.
