Traveling in today's chaotic airports can be stressful and expensive. Before you decide to pack up and head to the airport, however, you want to be sure your suitcase is the appropriate size. Wrong or oversized luggage pieces will cost you more to bring along and, in extreme cases, denied access to your flight. Measuring the length, width and weight of the suitcases you intend to bring along will ensure that your airline check-in runs smoothly and costs as little as possible. Utilize the following quick tips, and you will be flying high in no time.

    How to Measure a Suitcase

  1. Step 1

Stretch a tape measure across the length of your suitcase. Note the number on a piece of paper.

  2. Step 2

Stretch the tape measure across the width of your suitcase. Note the number on a piece of paper.

  3. Step 3

Multiply the length times the width of your suitcase. Most airlines allow suitcases to be between 61 and 62 inches. Suitcases that measure larger than this may be subjected to fines.

  4. Step 4

Pack your suitcase with everything you plan to bring. Place on scale to weigh. Airlines allow a maximum of 44 to 50 pounds for the first bag checked. Remove unnecessary articles if your bag weighs more to avoid paying overweight fines.

on 12/1/2009 This method for measurement is wrong. Otherwise, a 7 inch by 9 inch box (of any depth) wouldn't be allowed in checked baggage.
