Compost bins that are made from skids or shipping pallets are long-lasting, sturdy units. You can find skids at low or no cost for a budget-friendly bin project. You need to use rust-free, long-lasting nails and wire to give the bin extra stability. This is a project that works better with an assistant to help you.
Take a shovel and scrape the ground as level as possible in the area where you want your compost bin.
2
Lay one skid flat on to the cleared ground. This is the base.
3
Have a partner help you hold one skid vertically at one side of the horizontal skid on the ground. If you are alone, use something to prop the heavy skid up to the base skid. You can use heavy wire to hold the skids together. Wrap the wire around the wooden slats until they are secured.
4
Nail the corners of the two skids together. This will take strength, as the hard wood can be tough to penetrate.
5
Set a second skid in for the back of the bin and nail it to the base and the first wall skid. Repeat with the remaining side of the bin.
6
Place the fifth and final skid at the front of the bin. Wire the side of it to the first wall you put up. Wrap wire tightly at the bottom, center and top. This will enable you to use this skid as a door when it is time to begin a new compost process.
