Step 1
Buy an energy-efficient central air conditioner to reduce energy use and save money. Central air conditioners are rated depending on their seasonal energy efficiency ratio, or SEER. Choose a unit with at least a SEER rating of 13.
-
Step 2
Make sure, when installing a central AC unit, that there are an adequate number of supply registers to deliver cool air through the unit. Also check the return air registers to ensure they will carry warm air from the house to the air conditioning unit.
-
Step 3
Allow enough space inside to install, maintain and repair the new AC system. Install an access door in the duct or furnace so you can reach and clean the evaporator coil.
-
Step 4
Install additional duct work if needed. Put it within the living space, as opposed to the attic, if possible. Seal all the ducts with duct mastic. If they are in the attic, also insulate them heavily.
-
Step 5
Locate the condensing unit away from neighbors to limit the noise. Make sure there aren't structures or vegetation obstructing the flow of air to the unit.
-
Step 6
Put the condensing unit in a shady area. This will reduce your costs by 1 to 2 percent.
